This form is called "Rojo" (Red) by locals.
There also exists a form called "Blanco" (White).

So far, one of only two species of the genus, in which larvofile mouthbrooding has been recognized.

Distribution and habitat
I collected this species in a small creek entering a tributary to the Río Ampiyacu, Pebas-area, District of Loreto, Peruvian Amazon, in October 2006.
The water ( at the end of the dry season):
pH: 4,81, Conductivity: 26 microSiemens/cm, T: 28,9 °C
Breeding
Easy to breed.
Because of the way they breed, the numbers of eggs/fry are low.
