Some males of this species have a red pattern in the caudal fin - they are called Apistogramma sp. "Shaly"
The males without a red pattern in the caudal fin - are called Apistogramma sp. "Rocafuerte"

Distribution and habitat

Upper Río Napo, Peru/Ecuador border

We found this in 2012, in the Río Napo-drainage in Peru, very close to the Ecuador border.

Black-ish water; pH: 5.45  Conductivity: 8 microSiemens/cm  Temperature: 23.8°C

Not as easy to breed as other members of the A. cacatuoides group.
