Identification

A-number: 190

Taxonomy

Staeck 1991

A.-norberti-Group (It shares some features with species in the A. cacatuoides- and A.-nijsseni-Groups)

Amazingly some of the males collected in the Río Tamshiyacu drainage lack the characteristic black patch in the posterior part of the dorsal fin.

Synonyms

A. sp. "Großmaul/Big-mouth"

Distribution and habitat

The type locality occurs in the Río Tahuayo drainage (L. Río Ucayali, Peru), but I have collected it in the Río Tamshiyacu drainage too.

Staeck (1991d): A. norberti inhabits a shaded jungle stream that flows into the Quebrada Nuevo Horizonte in the lower Río Tahuayo drainage. The type specimens were collected during the low water period in transparent, yellowish colored water in remnant pools that contained deposits of brush and leaf litter (pH 5.9; <1º dGH; 2º KH; 10 µ/cm; 24ºC/75ºF).

I collected this beautiful species in the Río Tahuayo drainage, not far from the village Nuevo Horizonte,
in October 2011, and in the Río Tamshiyacu drainage in 2012.
Pictures from the habitat in the Río Tahuayo drainage could be seen above.

The water:
pH: 4,74    Conductivity: 7 microSiemens/cm     Temperature: 25,7ºC/78,3ºF

Water parameters

PH : 4 - 6
ppm : Very low

My Experience

Needs soft, acid water to thrive. In such water, it is quite easy to keep.

Breeding

Breeds quite easily in very soft water with a pH around 5.
