Distribution and habitat

Small streams in the Rio Itaya / Rio Nanay-drainages, district of Loreto, Peruvian Amazon.

Pictures above show black water habitats where I collected this species in Loreto, Peru, in 2005, 2007 and 2009.

pH measured between 3,46 and 4,85,
Conductivity: 12 - 59 µS/cm
Temperature:  26 - 32 °C

A small report from when we collected it in 2009

Water parameters

PH : 3,4 - 6
ppm : < 50

My Experience

Needs very good water-quality, low water movement, dimmed lights, and quite acid and soft water, to thrive, stay healthy and breed.

This species has a certain aggression potential in aquariums, but in fairly large tanks with lots of hiding places, I keep groups without problems.

Lebiasinidae (Copella, Copeina, Pyrrhulina and Nannostomus - species) are natural dither fish, and works perfect in aquariums too.

Breeding

Easy to breed if pH can be brought down to 5 or even lower, and the water is (very) soft.
Several breeding females in the same tank could leed to heavy fighting among the females, and loss of the weaker (ones) if the tank is too small or not provided with enough hiding places.
